The Arizona Diamondbacks punched their ticket to the World Series for a matchup against the Texas Rangers by defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series at Citizens Bank Park.

The Diamondbacks trailed the Phillies in the series, 3-2, before winning two consecutive games on the road. The Rangers had a similar path to the Fall Classic as they were down 3-2 to the Houston Astros before taking two straight games at Minute Maid Park.

With that, a World Series streak involving the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros has been snapped. For the first time since 2017, the Fall Classic does not feature either of the teams.

The Dodgers made appearances in 2017, 2018 and 2020; while the Astros represented the American League in 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2022.

2017 World Series: Astros vs. Dodgers

The Astros defeated the Dodgers in seven games to win their first championship in franchise history. The matchup was considered one of the best in MLB history at the time, but it is now overshadowed by Houston’s sign-stealing scandal.

2018 World Series: Red Sox vs. Dodgers

The Dodgers returned to the Fall Classic in 2018, but were overmatched by the Boston Red Sox, who won an MLB-best 108 games that season. Like the Astros in 2017, the Red Sox were later found to have illegally stolen signs during their World Series run, though by different means.

2019 World Series: Nationals vs. Astros

The Astros made it back to the World Series for the first time in two years, but lost to the Washington Nationals in seven games. The Nationals won two elimination games on the road to capture their first title in franchise history.

Moreover, the Astros and Nationals both won only road games during the matchup.

2020 World Series: Dodgers vs. Rays

The Dodgers posted the best record in all of baseball during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and went on to win their first championship since 1988 by defeating the Tampa Bay Rays in six games.

2021 World Series: Braves vs. Astros

The Atlanta Braves won just 88 games during the regular season, but played their best baseball when it mattered most en route to capturing a title over the Astros in six games.

2022 World Series: Astros vs. Phillies

The Astros swept the Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees in the first two rounds of the postseason before eliminating the Phillies in six games to capture their second World Series title in franchise history.
