The Los Angeles Dodgers began their 2020 postseason on a positive note Wednesday night, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers, 4-2, to put them one win away from advancing out of the three-game Wild Card Series.
The Brewers’ pitching staff has been hampered by injuries in recent weeks, forcing them to start lefty Brent Suter in Game 1. He wasn’t up for the task as his command was all over the place, walking four batters in the first inning.
Mookie Betts got things started with a leadoff double in his Dodgers postseason debut. Corey Seager and Max Muncy both then walked to load the bases, followed by more walks by Will Smith and AJ Pollock to bring home a pair of runs.
L.A.’s offense kept it going in the second inning, and again, Betts was right in the middle of it. Chris Taylor led off the inning with a double down the line, followed by a double from Betts to bring him home and extend the Dodgers’ lead to 3-0.
That was enough runs to seal the victory, L.A. added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh just to be safe. Corey Seager is coming off the best regular season of his career, and he stayed hot in the postseason with a solo home run to deep center.
The home run traveled an estimated 447 feet, good for the longest at Dodger Stadium this season.
Buehler sets tone on mound
Despite recent blister issues, the Dodgers still trusted Walker Buehler to make the start in Game 1, and he largely reward them for that confidence.
Buehler began the night with three shutout innings, striking out two in every frame. He ran into some trouble in the fourth when he missed his spot with a fastball and gave up a two-run home run to Orlando Arcia, although that was his only mistake all night.
Due to the blister, Buehler only went four innings, striking out eight. The Dodgers’ bullpen was then flawless in relief of him with Julio Urias tossing three scoreless innings, followed by Blake Treinen and Kenley Jansen pitching a scoreless frame each to close it out.
