The Los Angeles Angels made the first significant signing of the offseason when they agreed to a deal with Tyler Anderson from the Los Angeles Dodgers just minutes before he faced a deadline to decide on the qualifying offer for 2023.
The Dodgers offered him $19.65 million over one season with the qualifying offer, but he instead opted for a three-year deal with an average annual value of $13 million for a total of $39 million with the Angels. The Dodgers will receive a compensation pick after the fourth round of the 2023 MLB Draft due to Anderson rejecting their offer.
After signing with the Angels, Anderson took to his Instagram account to thank the Dodgers and their fans for “such a fun year.” He also added it was a “great experience” being part of a “first-class team and organization” in the “best city in the world.”
Anderson posted the best season of his career in 2022 and became an important member of a historic 111-win Dodgers team. Although Anderson enjoyed his time with the Dodgers, he valued the security from a multi-year contract with the Angels. The reportedly Dodgers were unwilling to offer a third year.
The veteran starter put himself in position to sign a multi-year contract after an All-Star season where he went 15-5 with a 2.57 ERA and 1.00 WHIP across 30 games (28 starts). Prior to the 2022 season, the 32-year-old signed a one-year, $8 million contract and began in the bullpen before entering the starting rotation because of an injury to Andrew Heaney.
Austin Barnes: Tyler Anderson signing with Angels is bittersweet
Austin Barnes praised Anderson for the impact he had on the Dodgers this past season and revealed his teammates will miss him, but they are happy for the left-hander on an individual level.
With the Angels, Anderson should pitch in the middle of a left-handed heavy starting rotation led by two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani and the talented Patrick Sandoval.
