The Los Angeles Dodgers started their road trip by sweeping the Arizona Diamondbacks, only to have the tables turned on them by the San Diego Padres. The Dodgers never led at any point in the three games at Petco Park and now return home after being swept themselves.
Their latest defeat came in a Trevor Bauer start and began with the Padres again taking a lead in the first inning. L.A. managed to battle back and tie the game before their defense faltered in the eighth inning of a 5-3 loss.
“They’re good. We know they’re good. They’ve got a lot of talent in that lineup, a lot of talent in the pitching staff, they’re a good team,” Bauer said after allowing three runs over six-plus innings.
“They absolutely kicked our ass from an intensity standpoint. They came to play and we didn’t. That’s what happens in baseball. You come out and try to attack the other team and try to win. When you don’t have that mindset, then you get rolled. We got rolled.”
It was a second instance Bauer voiced his frustration, with the first coming after the Dodgers sputtered in series against the L.A. Angels as part of a losing stretch.
“I think we knew it was going to be a difficult division. I don’t think anything’s changed. I don’t think anyone is surprised the Padres are good,” Bauer added.
“I don’t think anyone is surprised the Giants are good. I won’t put any extra emphasis on this game or this series, change expectations, or whatever. We knew this was going to be a thing. When you don’t play good baseball and you play a good team, you get beat. That’s what happened.”
Roberts disagrees with Bauer
Although manager Dave Roberts expressed a sentiment of the Dodgers getting “outplayed” by the Padres during the series, he stopped short of agreeing with Bauer on the intensity component.
“I know our guys came to play to win every night. When you’re at home in front of a packed house and most of the fans are your home fans, they feed off that,” Roberts said.
“I don’t think we weren’t ready to play or win baseball games.”
