The Los Angeles Dodgers were sluggish coming out of the All-Star break but awoke in the late innings Friday night for a comeback win and now continue their series against the Boston Red Sox with back-to-back national broadcasts.
Saturday’s game on Fox is going to be available regionally, while the series finale is set for ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. First pitch on Saturday is set for 4:15 p.m. PT.
Justin Wrobleski takes the mound for the middle game against the Red Sox in what’s his third career start. The fast-rising Dodgers pitching prospect made his MLB debut on July 7 and remained in the rotation heading into the All-Star break.
Wrobleski was in position to earn his first win but the Dodgers inexplicably collapsed as the Tigers rallied for five runs in the ninth inning before coming away with a walk-off victory in the 10th.
Wrobleski pitched five innings, allowed five hits, four runs and two homers in each of his first two starts. Though against the Tigers, three runs were earned.
While Wrobleski has made a string of starts since getting called up, his spot in the rotation moving forward may be in jeopardy due to Tyler Glasnow returning Wednesday and Clayton Kershaw potentially being on the verge of coming off the injured list as well.
Brayan Bello starts for the Red Sox as he looks to find some stability in what’s been an uneven season. The 25-year-old signed a six-year, $55 million contract extension in March and his deal includes a team option for a seventh year at $21 million.
Bello is 10-5 with a 5.32 ERA and 1.47 WHIP across 17 starts this season. He struggled mightily on June 25 and was given seven days of rest before next taking the mound.
That paid off as Bello allowed just one run over 6.2 innings at the beginning of the month. But that was followed by struggling against the Oakland Athletics. Bello then improved some as he allowed three runs to the Kansas City Royals over 6.1 innings his last time out.
Even with some of his inconsistency, the Red Sox are 4-1 in Bello’s last five starts.
