Tyler Anderson turned in a scoreless start and Cody Bellinger hit two home runs to help lead the Los Angeles Dodgers past the San Diego Padres, 4-0, to extend their winning streak to eight games and complete a third consecutive series sweep.
Anderson didn’t allow a baserunner until Ha-Seong Kim’s single with one out in the third inning. The Padres then had another reach when Juan Soto led off the fourth with a walk, but nothing came of either instance.
Anderson later wiped out a Jurickson Profar single by inducing Soto into an inning-ending double play in the sixth. The singles were all Anderson allowed as he got through seven innings on just 84 pitches. He authored the Dodgers’ 29th scoreless start of the season.
The stellar outing by Anderson bested a quality start from Yu Darvish. The Dodgers scored both of their runs off Darvish in the third inning, thanks to a home run from Bellinger and Freddie Freeman’s two-out base hit.
While Darvish did what he could to keep the game close, the Padres’ bullpen allowed the Dodgers to create a bit of separation. Bellinger went to nearly the identical spot of his first homer for another solo shot in the bottom of the seventh.
That gave Bellinger 15 career multi-homer games and his second this season. The first came April 24, coincidentally against the Padres as well, but at Petco Park.
Freeman added to Luis García’s troubles with his second two-out RBI single of the game before the reliever could get through the inning.
Evan Phillips worked a scoreless eighth and Craig Kimbrel stranded a two-out walk in the ninth to finish out the win.
Dodgers vs. Padres
The Dodgers are now 20-9 against the Padres start of the 2021 season, have won eight of 10 this year and 16 of the last 18 overall in their head-to-head meetings. The Dodgers have not lost a season series to the Padres since going 8-10 in 2010.
L.A. and San Diego will play nine more games before the 2022 regular season concludes.
