The Los Angeles Dodgers were three outs from defeating the San Francisco Giants and pulling into a tie for first place in the National League West, but Kenley Jansen blew the save opportunity in what resulted as a 4-2 loss.
Coming off a multi-home run effort, Taylor sent a game-tying home run into the left field pavilion in the bottom of the first inning. To that point he had a double and three home runs in his past four at-bats.
The game remained tied until AJ Pollock’s RBI double with two outs in the fourth inning scored Cody Bellinger from first base. Bellinger endured another subpar night at the plate but made a pair of impressive catches in center field and used his speed to score what nearly was the deciding run.
Julio Urias surrendered a solo home run to Mike Yastrzemski in the first inning but settled in from there to get through seven frames. He retired seven in a row after Yastrzemski’s homer and stranded a two-out walk in the fourth inning.
Urias’ biggest jam came in the fifth when Thairo Estrada reached on an infield single. A sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position and Estrada then took third base on a wild pitch. Urias retired the next two batters to keep the Dodgers’ 2-1 lead intact.
With somewhat of a taxed bullpen, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts pushed Urias to get him through seven. After an infield single allowed the tying run to reach in the seventh, Taylor covered significant ground to get to second base for an inning-ending double play.
Blake Treinen worked a scoreless eighth inning but Jansen immediately ran into trouble and surrendered a go-ahead home run to Wilmer Flores in the ninth. The blown save was Jansen’s second in a row and fourth this season.
Victor Gonzalez inherited a bases-loaded jam and walked a run in on a pitch that went against him and later led to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts getting ejected.
Dodgers keep chasing Giants
On top of the Dodgers not reigning over the division so far this season, they have continued to lose of late whenever being in position to ascend into first place in the NL West.
