The Los Angeles Dodgers saw their nine-game win streak snapped in the series opener so were looking to get back on track when they took on the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.
Unfortunately though, Tuesday brought the same result as defense cost the Dodgers in a 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Marlins.
It took a little bit for the offense to get going on both sides as Marlins starter Pablo Lopez had the first hit of the game for either team in the bottom of the third.
The Dodgers offense was finally able to break through in the top of the fourth against Lopez. Cody Bellinger got things started with a leadoff single on the 12th pitch at-bat. The ball got away from Marlins right field Garrett Cooper, allowing Bellinger to get all the way to third.
Will Smith wasted no time driving him home with a single, giving the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. L.A. eventually loaded the bases in that fourth inning but was unable to add to its lead as Mookie Betts struck out to get Lopez out of the jam.
Meanwhile, on the mound for the Dodgers, Tony Gonsolin turned in his best outing of the season by a longshot. He was in control all night and even got deep into the game for the first time, completing 5.2 shutout innings.
The right-hander allowed just two hits while striking out three and walking one on 72 pitches in what his best outing of the season by a wide margin.
Jake Reed, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Oklahoma City earlier in the day, was the first reliever out of the bullpen for the Dodgers. He almost got out of the sixth without allowing a run in his Major League debut, but Gavin Lux made an error on a two-out ground ball by Jesus Aguilar that brought home a run to tie the game at one.
After a scoreless seventh from the Dodgers, Garrett Cleavinger got the first two outs of the bottom half before allowing an infield single to Jazz Chisholm. The speedy infielder attempted to steal second base but was gunned down by Will Smith to end the inning, which was upheld on a replay review despite Chisholm appearing to be safe.
The game remained tied into the ninth after a scoreless eighth from Jimmy Nelson. The Dodgers got the go-ahead run aboard in the ninth but were unable to capitalize, setting up a potential walk-off opportunity for Miami.
Scott Alexander, pitching for the second consecutive day, allowed three of the first four hitters he faced to each base to load up the bases with one out. He then got a huge strikeout of Chisholm before giving way to Blake Treinen to face Starling Marte.
Treinen, as has been the case for most of the year, got the job done with a groundout to send it to extras.
After the Dodgers went scoreless in the top of the 10th, Treinen came back out for the bottom half. While he was one out away from sending the game into the 11th, a ball slightly got away from Smith and he tried to get Marte taking the third.
The ball again got away though, allowing Marte to come in and score the winning run. The Dodgers now fall to a league-worst 1-8 in extra-inning games.
