The Los Angeles Dodgers snapped a three-game losing streak and now look to take the series from the San Diego Padres. The finale at Dodger Stadium is being played in front of a national audience for ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.
Mookie Betts is going to mic’d up for a portion of the broadcast, just like Justin Turner was for ESPN back in May, and Trea Turner on Peacock last week. Betts is back in right field after playing second base for a night of some rest.
On the mound, the Dodgers turn to Caleb Ferguson as an opener for his first start of the season. Ferguson is 1-0 with a 1.85 ERA, 2.59 FIP and 0.90 WHIP across 25 games this year.
Ferguson will be followed by Ryan Pepiot, who was recalled as the corresponding move to David Price going on the 15-day injured list due to left wrist inflammation.
Up to this point, each of Pepiot’s seven games with the Dodgers has been a start. He’s 2-0 with a 4.02 ERA in those outings, and went 1-0 with a 5.43 ERA over a string of three starts in August. Pepiot is coming off a quality start in which he held the Miami Marlins to two runs over six innings and set a career high with seven strikeouts.
The Padres counter with Mike Clevinger, who enters 5-5 with a 3.59 ERA across 17 games (16 starts) this season. Clevinger allowed three earned runs or fewer in five of six starts during August, and the one instance he failed to do so was against the Dodgers.
They scored five runs off the right-hander and chased him from the game in the fifth inning.
