Mookie Betts continues to be celebrated for helping the Los Angeles Dodgers win their first World Series since 1988, with his latest recognition being included alongside Lakers legend Kobe Bryant in a mural painted at the parking lot of Philippe’s The Original.
Philippe’s itself is no stranger to murals, as it previously was used in 2019 for a mural that featured Justin Turner and Kiké Hernandez to commemorate the Dodgers’ move from Brooklyn.
Bryant has been depicted in a slew of murals around Los Angeles and the world since his tragic accident in January of 2020. For Betts the honor is more recent — specifically since the Dodgers won the World Series last year.
Those were the expectations when he was acquired in a trade with the Boston Red Sox prior to the start of 2020 Spring Training. At the time it appeared Betts would potentially be a one-year rental due to entering the final season of his contract.
However, he and the Dodgers came to terms on a record-setting extension prior to Opening Day. Betts raved about the organization and said his focus was on winning multiple championships.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and the team maintained Betts was not expected to carry the team alone. While that held true, there is no denying he played a key role en route to the Dodgers ending their World Series drought.
Betts was particularly effective once Roberts settled on batting him in the leadoff spot, followed by Corey Seager. Betts not only helped set the table, he wreaked havoc on the basepaths and played stellar defense in right field.
Betts ranked No. 1 right fielder
Per usual, MLB Network’s The Shredder ranked the top-10 players at each position heading into the regular season. Betts again secured the top spot for all right fielders in baseball.
