Mookie Betts was named to the 2020 All-MLB Team, along with Los Angeles Dodgers teammates Clayton Kershaw and Corey Seager. Betts earned a First Team selection, while Kershaw and Seager were each included on the Second Team. Justin Turner also was a finalist but did not place.
Last year the Dodgers were represented by Cody Bellinger (First Team selection) and Hyun-Jin Ryu (Second Team).
Voting for this season’s best players was split evenly between fan voting and a panel of media members. The All-MLB Teams are made up of players from both leagues.
Selections consisted of one player per position at catcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop and designated hitters. There were three outfielders named to the first- and second-teams, regardless of which position they play; five starting pitchers and two relievers.
Betts earned a second career selection since the league began recognizing players as such last year. In 2019, Betts made the All-MLB Second Team as a member of the Boston Red Sox.
Bryce Harper, Eloy Jiménez and George Springer, were also among outfielders named finalists for the 2020 All-MLB Team.
Betts was nothing short of impressive in his first season with the Dodgers, especially once manager Dave Roberts settled on batting him leadoff and Seager second in the lineup. Betts finished the year batting .292/.366/.927 with nine doubles, 16 home runs, 39 RBI and 10 stolen bases.
The 28-year-old additionally played stellar defense in right field and was rewarded with a fifth consecutive Gold Glove Award. Betts’ ability to impact a game at the plate and in the field was on full display during the postseason as he helped the Dodgers win their first World Series since 1988.
Kershaw was scratched from an Opening Day start and placed on the 10-day injured list due to back trouble, but was healthy and productive upon being activated in early August. He finished the regular season 6-2 with a 2.16 ERA and 0.84 WHIP while holding opponents to a .194 batting average in 10 starts.
Kershaw fared well in the postseason, which helped erase the stigma that hovered over him in October.
Finally healthy and fully recovered from Tommy John and hip surgeries, Seager put together an MVP-caliber campaign. Although he didn’t win that award, Seager did earn MVP honors in the National League Championship Series and World Series.
