UPDATE (Nov. 28, 7:15 p.m. PT): Although the Los Angeles Dodgers were once identified as the frontrunner to sign Max Scherzer, that now is believed to be the New York Mets.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have a need for starting pitching that can easily be filled by re-signing Max Scherzer, but key contributors Clayton Kershaw, Corey Seager and Kenley Jansen are among the club’s free agents as well.

The Dodgers nevertheless have been open about their interest in retaining Scherzer, who regularly raved about his experiences with the team after being traded at the deadline this past season.

Scherzer additionally has been linked to the L.A. Angels, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals at various points during the offseason. Having been active on the position-player side over recent days, the Mets reportedly are now focused on Scherzer.

However, the general perception is the Dodgers may still be ahead in the Scherzer sweepstakes, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network:

As the Mets’ ramp up their pursuit, Scherzer is believed to be nearing a decision in free agency. Like Seager, he reportedly hopes to sign a new contract prior to the collective bargaining agreement expiring at 8:59 p.m. PT on Wednesday, Dec. 1, and a lockout likely going into effect.

Scott Boras recently indicated his client is focused on playing for a World Series contender more so than location of a team.

Scherzer latest battle between Dodgers, Mets

Last offseason the Dodgers and Mets were locked in a free agency battle for Trevor Bauer that swung late in favor of L.A.

That addition wound up becoming a stain on the franchise as Bauer is under investigation for alleged sexual assault, but the Dodgers presumably are keen on retaining Scherzer for both his contributions on the field and positive presence in the clubhouse.
