The Los Angeles Dodgers hit five home runs in a 14-4 rout of the New York Mets on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep at Citi Field.
Max Muncy was responsible for two of those blasts, beginning his day with a two-run shot off Carlos Carrasco in the second inning. The 30-year-old later added another two-run homer in the sixth that all but put the game away.
Muncy finished with the two homers in four at-bats but made solid contact throughout the contest. He hit a deep fly ball in the fourth inning that had an exit velocity of 102 mph and traveled 377 feet according to Statcast.
The home runs and deep drive all were hit to the same location in left-center field.
“It was just finally making the adjustment to how they were pitching me and not trying to do too much,” Muncy said. “Just going with what they were giving me and I finally got some good results out of it. That one felt really good, but it wasn’t meant to be. Just one of those balls.”
Muncy’s multi-home run performance in the finale capped off what turned out to be a very productive series. He went a combined 5-for-13 with one double, two homers and four RBI across the three games in New York.
The weekend series didn’t come without some controversy, however, as Muncy had a laser pointed in his eyes by a Mets fan during the series opener.
“Something kept flashing in my eye the whole at-bat, and I thought it was just the videoboard kind of malfunctioning in left field,” Muncy recalled.
“After the second swing I was kind of standing there and kept seeing something flash in my eye. I looked up and I was able to see a green laser going all the way up in the second deck, so I was able to see right where the guy was.
“I pointed it out to the umpire, and I guess one of the umpires had seen during the mound visit a laser pointer all over the ground, so they knew there was something out there.
“They just didn’t know where it was, but I was able to point it out for them. And yeah, the home runs felt good. They always feel good.”
Roberts: Mets fan shining laser in Muncy’s eyes was ‘dirty’
Though nothing serious came from the incident, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts understandably wasn’t happy with the fan who shined the laser in Muncy’s eyes.
“Some fan was shining a laser in his eye the first two pitches, so he addressed it and we cleaned it up,” Roberts said after the Dodgers’ 6-4 win in 10 innings. “Unfortunately he was already in the hole versus Diaz.
“It’s just a fan coming here, thinking they’re helping the home club, but it’s just dirty.”
