The Los Angeles Dodgers signed manager Dave Roberts to a three-year contract extension that runs through the 2025 season. It’s the second extension Roberts and the Dodgers have agreed to since he was hired as manager in November 2015.
“I’m very happy to have the opportunity to continue leading this great team into the future,” Roberts said in a statement.
“To be able to wear the Dodgers uniform, and represent this world-class organization on and off the field, is truly an honor. From the players to the front office staff, every single person affiliated with the club has played a vital role in the team’s success throughout my tenure. I look forward to continuing our quest to be the best in baseball each and every year.”
Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman added: “Since becoming the manager in 2015, Dave Roberts has consistently demonstrated elite leadership skills and infectious energy. He has been a vital part of the Dodgers’ success over the last six-plus years and we all look forward to seeing him lead the organization from the dugout for a long time to come.”
Roberts previously was extended after the 2018 season. He classified that process as “seamless” and over the past several months continued to downplay any concern over his future despite this season being the final year on that deal.
Friedman and Roberts maintained throughout the offseason that a new contract extension was merely a formality. Friedman went so far as to express his belief Roberts possibly being a lame-duck manager during the 2022 season would not have been a distraction.
Roberts echoed that sentiment and said he would manage as normal even if he did not receive a new agreement.
Most anticipated a contract extension would be agreed to during the MLB lockout, but Roberts reported for the start of Spring Training without a new deal in place. “We’re moving forward,” Roberts said days before joining players at Camelback Ranch.
“Hopefully we can get it done sooner than later. I think we’re really close. I don’t think it’s going to be an issue here in the coming days.”
Through his first seven seasons as manager, Roberts has led the Dodgers to an MLB-best 542-329 record, five National League West titles, three NL pennants and one World Series championship.
Should Roberts remain with the club through his latest contract extension, he would join Walter Alston and Tommy Lasorda as the only managers in Dodgers franchise history to be at the helm for at least 10 seasons.
Roberts’ history with Dodgers
Roberts became the first manager in MLB history to lead his team to a division title in each of his first four seasons. Prior to Roberts being hired, the Dodgers had never won three consecutive division titles in franchise history.
In 2016 they became the first team to win the NL West in four consecutive seasons since the Divisional Era began in 1969 — a record that was extended to eight before being snapped by the San Francisco Giants in 2021.
Overall, the Dodgers’ streak trailed only the Atlanta Braves (14) and New York Yankees (nine) for most consecutive division titles since 1969.
Roberts won NL Manager of the Year in 2016 and placed second in 2017, but hasn’t been a finalist since then — finishing sixth (2018), fourth (2019) and fifth (2020).
