The Los Angeles Dodgers signed 18 of their 19 selections in the 2022 MLB Draft by the deadline last week, along with adding six undrafted players to the organization.
The 2022 Dodgers draft was headlined by taking Dalton Rushing out of the University of Louisville in the second round (40th overall pick). Dodgers vice president of amateur scouting Billy Gasparino believes Rushing has the ability to stick at catcher, but also enough athleticism to change positions if needed.
The Dodgers only had one selection within the first two rounds of the 2022 Draft due to their first pick dropping 10 spots as a result of exceeding the luxury tax threshold in 2021. The Dodgers lost their second- and fifth-round picks but recouped the latter selection due to Corey Seager rejecting the qualifying offer and signing with the Texas Rangers.
Furthermore, the Dodgers’ $4.2 million bonus pool ranked last among all 30 teams. Bonus pools are calculated by adding the slot values of every pick through the first 10 rounds. MLB made a change this year to remove a $20,000 limit for signing bonuses given to undrafted players.
However, any amount over $125,000 counted against a team’s bonus pool.
The lone 2022 Draft pick the Dodgers failed to sign was 20th-round selection Carter McCulley from Pensacola Catholic High School. He’s committed to attend Pensacola State College.
Of the Dodgers’ 19 draft picks, 12 were position players.
