Major League Baseball announced the latest results of their monitor testing, with a total of 12,485 samples collected over the past week. Of those, seven were discovered as new positives for coronavirus (COVID-19).
That’s down from the 29 new positives MLB dealt with the week prior. Among the seven discovered this past week, three were players and four were staff members.
Further broken down, five were MLB personnel and two were from an alternate training site that each club is operating this season.
Although the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets organizations have been faced with positive tests, MLB thus far has avoided a second significant outbreak like what swept through the Miami Marlins while they were on a road trip.
Fortunately, there was not significant transmission between the Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies despite the teams playing a series finale at Citizens Bank Park in a decision that quickly was realized to have been ill-advised.
MLB has collected and tested a total of 78,612 monitoring samples, with 84 — 0.1% — resulting in new positives. Of those, 54 have been players and the remaining 28 were staff members. Nineteen different teams have had an individual produce a positive during monitor testing.
Dodgers keeping safe
The Los Angeles Dodgers dealt with a few players contracting the virus before the start of Summer Camp, with Scott Alexander, Tony Gonsolin, Kenley Jansen, AJ Pollock and Keibert Ruiz revealing over the past few weeks they each tested positive.
Though, Gonsolin maintained his was a false positive as he didn’t experience any symptoms and regularly tested negative in additional screening.
Meanwhile, Alexander didn’t have too difficult of a time, but Jansen, Pollock and Ruiz each said they endured a difficult recovery. Jansen doesn’t believe he is yet back to 100%, and Ruiz explained he lost weight that was related due to not having a sense of taste.
