Despite limitations brought on by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF) and Kershaw’s Challenge have adapted to continue providing for those in need. On Saturday they joined Shoes that Fit in distributing new pairs of shoes to over 800 students from 92nd St. Elementary School in Watts, California.

The drive-thru event was held at Ted Watkins Memorial Park, with families also receiving food boxes. LADF additionally awarded Shoes that Fit a $20,000 grant to provide new well-fitting athletic shoes for children and a co-branded truck to expedite deliveries to low-income communities.

“While the start of the new school year has been unconventional, the need for a new, well-fitting pair of shoes is more important than ever to keep kids active and healthy as they learn remotely,” LADF CEO Nichol Whiteman said.

“Too many families must choose between putting food on the table or buying new shoes. It is our hope this will provide some relief to the families and joy to the kids during these unprecedented times.”

Shoes that Fit was selected by Kershaw’s Challenge as one of their beneficiaries this year. They have been tasked with providing shoes to children in Los Angeles and Dallas, two cities where Kershaw’s Challenge is active in carrying out charitable acts.

Clayton and Ellen were unable to attend the shoe giveaway, but did record a video message that was played for families as they drove through.

“Sometimes meeting a basic need—like providing shoes for kids to go to school and be kids—that’s the stuff that matters most. We love the mission of Shoes that Fit because it is so simple—get new shoes on the feet of kids,” Clayton Kershaw said.

“This event means a lot to us at Kershaw’s Challenge. Post-season baseball is in full swing, but we are so grateful for the friends and partners who are making this event possible. My hope is that a pair of new shoes makes these kids feel seen, known and loved.”

Kershaw’s Challenge carries out Back to School Bash

Back in August, Kershaw’s Challenge and the LADF came together to hold a modified Back to School Bash at Dodger Stadium. Like with the shoes giveaway, families participated in a drive-thru and the Kershaws were on hand via Zoom.
