The Los Angeles Dodgers have some of the most pristine and recognizable uniforms in all of professional sports, yet it hasn’t stopped calls for the team to introduce some form of an alternate for the regular season.

The possibility gained in popularity when Nike took over the MLB apparel contract at the start of the 2020 season. They also outfit NBA teams, among others, and made sweeping changes away from traditional home and road uniforms.

That progressive-thinking approach hasn’t reached MLB, where most teams rely on their custom uniforms along with select throwbacks on occasion. Spring Training offers clubs an opportunity to incorporate some variety, which extends to caps as well.

For the Dodgers that entails spending much of Cactus League play in a blue top whether playing at Camelback Ranch or on the road. It’s a jersey Justin Turner lent his support to for being used as a road alternate during the regular season.

Turner garnered plenty of support with his idea, but there is a substantial segment of traditionalists who remain against the possible change.

As it stands the Dodgers are guaranteed to wear three different jerseys during any given regular season. They of course don a home white with “Dodgers” in the trademark script across the chest, and have two gray tops for the road. One features the same “Dodgers” cursive while the other has “Los Angeles.”

During the 1999 season, the team did wear a blue alternate that resembled their current Spring Training look but had silver outlining and piping.

Roberts: Dodgers home jersey second to none

Manager Dave Roberts has often stated the Dodgers’ home jersey pops and is much brighter than any other white-based uniform in baseball. Roberts most recently stated it when Trevor Bauer put it on during his introductory press conference at Dodger Stadium.
