Once it became apparent Julio Urías would not return from the 15-day injured list to start in the series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies because of lingering soreness in his left hamstring, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed hope he would throw multiple bullpen sessions during the homestand.

Urías did work off the mound on Wednesday and threw a second bullpen session Saturday.

“Julio was good. He did an up-down, 40 pitches in total and used his entire pitch mix. It was really good,” Roberts said. “That ‘pen he had the other day and now today, so the next thing is he’ll face some hitters and then he’ll go out on assignment, I think to Rancho.”

When Urías throws a round of live batting practice it’s expected to take place at Dodger Stadium. Considering the Dodgers’ upcoming schedule, however, it’s plausible that could take place on an off day or in Anaheim next week during the Freeway Series.

Without Urías in the rotation, the Dodgers turned to a bullpen game against the Phillies and were expected to do so again on Friday. However, bullpen usage prompted the team to instead call up Emmet Sheehan for his MLB debut.

Sheehan is expected to make at least one more start for the Dodgers while Urías remains on the mend from a left hamstring strain.

Julio Urías timeline for return

At the time of putting Urías on the 15-day IL, which was backdated, the Dodgers expected he would only be out the minimum required time.

Now one month later, Urías is likely to be out a minimum of another week, which rules out starting in the Houston Astros series.

Roberts instead said the left-hander should return from the IL for a start during the road series with the Kansas City Royals from June 30-July 2.
