In celebration recognition of, and to further support the year-round work the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF) does, they held their fourth annual Blue Diamond Gala at Dodger Stadium, which was emceed by Arsenio Hall and George Lopez.

One year removed from having Earth, Wind & Fire and Maroon 5 perform at the event, the LADF called on multi-award winning, platinum-selling artist John Legend. Legend previously sang in front of a baseball audience at Joc Pederson’s wedding during the offseason, and a World Series.

But the backdrop of Dodger Stadium provided him with a unique setting. “It’s an iconic place,” Legend said. “And the Dodgers are one of the most storied franchises in Major League Baseball. To be here to support the foundation and great work they’re doing, is really exciting.

“We live in Los Angeles now after living in New York for a long time. It’s nice to be here and know we have a home here and have a connection with the Dodgers.”

The Blue Diamond Gala was attended by 1,700 guests and raised over $2.2 million. Proceeds will support the expansion of the Foundation’s direct programs: Dodgers Dreamfields and Dodger RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities).

“We work in the season, outside the season, ultimately our mission is to impact underserved youth throughout our city and in so many different neighborhoods that need it,” said Dodgers Foundation executive director Nichol Whiteman.

“We’re building baseball fields in urban communities here in Los Angeles. In fact, this year we will have completed our 50th Dodgers Dreamfield. We believe that baseball has power.”

Several current and former Dodgers were on hand, including Cody Bellinger, Nomar Garciaparra, Orel Hershiser, Matt Kemp, Clayton Kershaw, Yasiel Puig and Justin Turner. Players, dressed in formal attire, were joined by their significant others.

“I always say it’s like a Dodgers prom night,” Kourtney Turner said. “And it’s for a good cause. It’s fun to see everyone dressed up but also know we’re here bringing awareness to the foundation and all the good work that they do.”
