Kim Ng and the Miami Marlins made history with her hiring as general manager. She is now the highest ranking woman in baseball operations among all teams and is believed to be the first woman hired to the general manager position in all of North American professional sports.
“I entered Major League Baseball as an intern and, after decades of determination, it is the honor of my career to lead the Miami Marlins as their next general manager,” Ng said in a statement.
“We are building for the long term in South Florida, developing a forward-thinking, collaborative, creative baseball operation made up of incredibly talented and dedicated staff who have, over the last few years, laid a great foundation for success.
“This challenge is one I don’t take lightly. When I got into this business, it seemed unlikely a woman would lead a Major League team, but I am dogged in the pursuit of my goals. My goal is now to bring championship baseball to Miami.
“I am both humbled and eager to continue building the winning culture our fans expect and deserve.”
Ng has more than 30 years of experience in the sport, with 21 of those coming in a front office. Prior to joining the Marlins, she was with the Chicago White Sox (1990-96), New York Yankees (1998-2001) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2002-11).
Part of Ng’s tenure as assistant general manager for the Yankees overlapped with the franchise winning three World Series in a row and four in five years.
The Dodgers hired Ng as vice president and assistant GM in 2001. She was involved in free-agent signings and trades, oversaw the team’s arbitration handlings, scouting, medical and video departments.
Ng interviewed to become the Dodgers’ interim farm director in 2004, and the following year was in the running for their general manager vacancy in 2005, which ultimately went to Ned Colletti. Ng’s remained in her assistant position until joining the commissioner’s office in 2011.
In addition to the Dodgers, it is believed Ng interviewed for general manager with the Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, L.A. Angels and San Diego Padres.
She joins a Marlins team that is coming off a surprise season that saw them reach the postseason under National League Manager of the Year Don Mattingly. Ng and Mattingly previously worked together during their time with the Dodgers.
