The Los Angeles Dodgers have been without Tyler Glasnow since Aug. 16 when he was placed on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow tendinitis.
The initial expectation was that Glasnow would return after spending the minimum amount of time on the IL. However, his recovery has been slower than anticipated.
The right-hander was scratched from playing catch last Tuesday but managed to throw off flat ground on back-to-back days at Chase Field.
Glasnow returning this season is very much up in the air, but he expressed confidence that the time off will allow him to reset his mechanics, via Jack Harris of the L.A. Times:
“If there is any silver lining, I think taking the time off, you kind of get your body, it like resets back to normal,” he said. “Before I got hurt for a while there, I don’t think I was mechanically in a very good spot. I wasn’t moving how I used to move. Now, kind of going back to zero and then ramping back up, I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s the feeling I’m trying to feel.’ I think once I iron out a lot of that stuff, a lot of the other issues go away.”
Glasnow tossed three consecutive quality starts before landing on the IL, but went through a stretch where he allowed at least five runs in three outings from June 9-July 5.
The 31-year-old previously spent time on the 15-day IL earlier this year because of lower back tightness. That prevented him from pitching in his first career All-Star Game.
When healthy, Glasnow has proven to be the frontline-caliber starter that the Dodgers envisioned when they acquired him from the Tampa Bay Rays.
In 22 starts this season, he owns a 9-6 record with a 3.49 ERA, 2.91 FIP, 0.95 WHIP and 11.3 strikeouts per nine over 134 innings pitched.
Next steps for Tyler Glasnow
Glasnow’s next steps in his recovery could entail increasing the distance and intensity with which he plays catch. That would then lead to bullpen sessions and either one of or both, facing batters in simulated games or a rehab assignment.
