The Los Angeles Dodgers looked like they were once again going to pull out a win as they ended the ninth inning with a lead, but came away with a loss to the Detroit Tigers.
Yohan Ramírez pitched a scoreless eighth inning, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts sent him back out for the ninth with a one-run lead. It did not work out.
Ramírez allowed a leadoff triple, and then a single to tie the game. He then made a fielding error on a bunt that allowed the winning run into scoring position with no outs.
On the next play, the Tigers tried to bunt again, and Ramírez once again made an error, this time a throwing error that allowed the Tigers to score the winning run as they came away with a 4-3 victory.
The blown save comes just one day after the Dodgers blew a five-run lead in the ninth inning against the Tigers.
The Dodgers offense got off to a hot start against the Detroit Tigers, scoring three runs in the first inning. But from there, they were unable to get anything going.
Will Smith doubled to start them off, and he came around to score on a two-out double from Teoscar Hernández to put L.A. up 1-0. Andy Pages singled home Hernández to double the lead, and he ended up scoring when Miguel Rojas caught himself in a rundown following his single to put runners at the corners.
Brent Honeywell, who was claimed off waivers on Saturday, made the start, giving the Dodgers three shutout innings. He did not allow a baserunner until his final inning of work and struck out two hitters.
Following Honeywell, it was Ryan Yarbrough who took the ball, but he was unable to continue the success of his counterpart. Yarbrough dealt with traffic on the bases throughout all three innings he was pitching, allowing the first two baserunners to reach in each one of them.
He was able to limit the damage to just two runs with one in the fourth and one in the sixth as the Tigers were unable to take advantage of their opportunities.
Yarbrough was removed from the game with two outs in his third inning of work, and Michael Petersen and Anthony Banda each recorded two outs, over the next inning and a third without a run scoring.
Dodgers head into All-Star break
The first half of the season is now in the books as the Dodgers take a 56-41 record into the All-Star break. Only the Philadelphia Phillies own a better record in the National League, and the Dodgers are on pace to win roughly 95 games.
In addition, the Dodgers hold a 6.5 game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West. Despite their inconsistencies and injuries, it was a successful first half for the Dodgers, and they are once again primed to make the playoffs for the 12th straight season.
While most of the team will use the break as a rest and resent, the Dodgers are sending six players to Texas for the festivities, including Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Teoscar Hernández, Will Smith, Mookie Betts, Tyler Glasnow, however, the latter two will not play due to injuries.
Hernández is also going to participate in the Home Run Derby on Monday.
