Phase 2 of 2023 MLB All-Star Game voting opened Monday morning at 9 a.m. PT. The Los Angeles Dodgers had Will Smith, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez advance as National League finalists for the 93rd Midsummer Classic that is being played at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
With the exception of outfield for the NL and designated hitter for the American League, two finalists per position made it to Phase 2 of All-Star Game voting.
The Atlanta Braves’ Ronald Acuña Jr. (3,082,600 votes) and Los Angeles Angels two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani (2,646,307) are cemented as All-Star Game starters by virtue of leading their respective leagues in fan voting.
Betts placed second among NL outfielders and third in the league with 1,904,387 votes during Phase 1, but those didn’t carry over to the latest round of voting. The All-Star Game selection would be the seventh of Betts’ career (fourth start) and third with the Dodgers.
Freeman and Martinez led their respective positions in votes during Phase 1. Smith was second to the Braves’ Sean Murphy for NL catchers. Freeman is on track to become the first Dodgers first baseman to start in the MLB All-Star Game via fan voting since Steve Garvey did so from 1974-1980.
Fans can complete a ballot once per every 24 hours during the current period, which closes at 9 a.m. on Thursday. Complete All-Star Game starters will be unveiled on ESPN later that night.
The pitchers and reserves for National League and American League teams – totaling 23 for each side – will be determined through a combination of “Player Ballot” choices and selections made by the commissioner’s office.
The entire 2023 MLB All-Star Game rosters will be announced on Sunday, July 2, at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN.
