The Los Angeles Dodgers continue their road trip Friday with the start of a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park but won’t face Logan Webb like it originally seemed.
It’s the second meeting of the season between the two rivals, with the first resulting in the Dodgers sweeping the Giants at home in May. L.A. was expecting to face Webb — who they became quite familiar with during the 2021 National League Division Series -— on Friday, but San Francisco decided to instead pitch him in the series finale against the Colorado Rockies.
Webb allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits over 5.2 innings in an error-filled game that ended in a Giants’ loss.
The Giants made the decision to pitch Webb on his regular day of rest rather than go with a bullpen game a day early because manager Gabe Kapler felt that winning Thursday was just as important as defeating the Dodgers, per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle:
Why? Well, manager Gabe Kapler emphasized before Wednesday’s game that every game is important, saying, “We want to win today’s game and we want to win tomorrow’s game and we want to win the games against the Dodgers. And we feel like we have good plans in place with good starting pitchers, quality starting pitchers, to be good against the Dodgers as well.”
The Giants wound up starting Jakob Junis in Webb’s place. Walker Buehler took the mound in the series opener but pitched just four innings prior to being removed due to right elbow discomfort.
Meanwhile, Clayton Kershaw was projected to be activated off the 10-day injured list Sunday, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that was moved up in order to provide Julio Urías with an extra day of rest.
Logan Webb vs. Dodgers
Webb starting on Thursday means the Dodgers will not see the Giants’ ace during the weekend series.
That should come as a big relief after he posted a 2.25 ERA in 16 innings against them last season before throwing another 14.2 innings with just one earned run allowed in their postseason matchup.
