Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Greg Maddux is part of the 16-member committee that will consider players on the 2023 National Baseball Hall of Fame Contemporary Era ballot.
The Hall of Famer is joined by Chipper Jones, Jack Morris, Ryne Sandberg, Lee Smith, Frank Thomas and Alan Trammell; Major League executives Paul Beeston, Theo Epstein, Arte Moreno, Kim Ng, Dave St. Peter and Ken Williams; and veteran media members/historians Steve Hirdt, LaVelle Neal and Susan Slusser.
The Contemporary Era ballot consists of Albert Belle, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Don Mattingly, Fred McGriff, Dale Murphy, Rafael Palmeiro and Curt Schilling. All eligible candidates made their biggest contributions to the game between 1980 and the present day.
Any player that receives votes on 75% of the ballots cast by the 16-member committee will earn election into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2023 and be inducted in Cooperstown on July 23, 2023, along with any electees who emerge from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) election that will be announced on January 24.
Results of the voting will be announced live on MLB Network on Sunday, December 4, beginning at 5 p.m. PT.
Baseball Hall of Fame made changes to Era Committee System
The Era Committees were formerly known as the Veterans Committee before the process was restructured in the spring of 2022.
Among the changes included a consolidation of eras into two timeframes: the Contemporary Baseball Era, consisting of the period from 1980 to present day, and the Classic Baseball Era, consisting of the period prior to 1980 and including Negro Leagues and pre-Negro Leagues stars.
Each of these three Era Committees will rotate on an annual basis, with each ballot consisting of eight candidates. The Contemporary Baseball/Managers-Umpires-Executives Era will be considered next year and the Classic Baseball Era will meet in the fall of 2024.
