When the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees in six games to win the 1981 World Series, it ended a 16-year drought for the organization.
A strong point of the club was its pitching staff, where the likes of Fernando Valenzuela, Jerry Reuss, Bob Welch and Burt Hooton combined to form one of the league’s most talented starting rotations.
L.A.’s bullpen also featured some notable arms, including closer Steve Howe and up-and-coming right-hander Dave Stewart.
A 16-year MLB veteran, Stewart is perhaps best known for his contributions with the Oakland Athletics. However, it was the Dodgers that gave him his first big league opportunity in 1978.
Stewart spent parts of the first four seasons of his career with the Dodgers, including the 1981 campaign in which he made 32 appearances out of the bullpen.
Stewart went on to appear in two additional games during the Fall Classic that year, earning his first of three World Series rings.
Stewart is now auctioning off his 1981 World Series ring, along with several other valuable items, as part of SCP Auctions’ Spring Premier Auction 2020.
The 14-karat gold ring, which features a large .75-carat diamond within a baseball diamond atop a dark blue stone surrounded by “LOS ANGELES DODGERS WORLD CHAMPIONS,” is up for auction until May 2.
There are multiple bids for the 1981 World Series ring as of this publishing, with the price having exceeded $5,000.
Other items Stewart is auctioning include his 1988 American League Championship ring, his 1989 World Series ring, his 1989 World Series MVP trophy, an 18-karat gold Rolex watch awarded for throwing a no-hitter on June, 29, 1990, his 1990 ALCS ring and 1993 World Series ring.
Stewart is one of two former Dodgers pitchers currently auctioning off MLB related items. Dan Haren has sold two-dozen bobbleheads and counting to help raise money for local charities.
His Clayton Kershaw bobblehead attracted the most attention, receiving 76 bids and ultimately selling for $1,000. Moreover, his Zack Greinke bobblehead netted $535 and an A.J. Ellis bobblehead additionally sold for $410.
All-in-all, Haren auctioned off 24 bobbleheads as of April 1, raising over $14,000.
