The Miami Marlins officially named former Los Angeles Dodgers coaches Lorenzo Bundy and Tim Wallach to Don Mattingly’s staff on Friday, among other hires.
Another notable addition to the Miami staff is Barry Bonds as hitting coach.
Wallach joins the Marlins as bench coach, while Bundy was hired as outfield/base running coach.
Wallach served as third base coach with the Dodgers from 2011-13, then was promoted to bench coach last season and held the same position in 2015.
Bundy leaves the organization he was with the last eight years, including 2014 and part of 2015 as third base coach. Prior to that, Bundy managed Triple-A Albuquerque from 2011-13.
Mattingly said during his introductory press conference with the Marlins he expected Wallach to also make the transition to Miami. Wallach later confirmed that would be the case if he wasn’t hired as Dodgers manager.
It became all the more unlikely when team director of player development Gabe Kapler and Dave Roberts emerged as finalists to replace Mattingly.
Bundy’s and Wallach’s departures are the latest in what’s been an exodus of coaches from the Dodgers’ 2015 staff.
Davey Lopes was he first to catch on elsewhere — agreeing to join Dusty Baker’s Washington Nationals staff as first base coach. Ron Roenicke, who joined the Dodgers in August as third base coach, now holds the same position with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Former hitting coach Mark McGwire was named the San Diego Padres bench coach on Wednesday. Kapler is expected to join Roberts’ staff, though under what capacity is currently unclear.
New York Mets bench coach Bob Geren will make the move to Los Angeles to fill the same role he did with the Mets. Geren was also a candidate for the Dodgers’ managerial position.
Additionally, it was reported former Arizona Diamondbacks hitting coach Turner Ward accepted a position with the Dodgers to fill the vacancy left by McGwire.
It’s believed pitching coach Rick Honeycutt will be retained, though Roberts stopped short of confirming as much after his introductory press conference on Tuesday.
