Despite an disappointing bullpen performance that led to a loss on Wednesday night, the Los Angeles Dodgers remain in position for a series win against the Colorado Rockies in the finale at Coors Field.
First pitch on Thursday night was delayed due to a hail storm that rolled into the area. The start time was pushed back to 7:30 p.m. PT.
The Dodgers have been treading water over their last 10 games, going 5-5 in those contests. They are 10-12 in June and facing the prospect of their first losing month since May 2018.
Desperate for depth and options in the starting rotation, the Dodgers dipped further into their farm system earlier this month to call up Emmet Sheehan. He has responded by having a historic rookie start while posting a 1-0 record and 1.50 ERA through two outings.
Sheehan impressed against the San Francisco Giants and Houston Astros, but now makes his first start on the road that is also at a hitter-friendly ballpark.
In his last start, Sheehan threw six innings against the Astros and allowed only two runs. Despite making the jump straight from Double-A Tulsa, Sheehan has been a balm for the Dodgers thus far.
The Rockies counter with Chase Anderson, who has struggled of late this season as he’s 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. Anderson converted a save and pitched five scoreless innings over two relief appearances for the Tampa Bay Rays before getting claimed off waivers by the Rockies.
He initially didn’t allow more than three earned runs through six starts for the Rockies, but not fared well in his two most recent outings. Anderson has pitched just 5.2 innings and allowed 16 runs in the two starts.
In his most recent start against the Los Angeles Angels, Anderson lasted 2.2 innings while giving up nine runs. The game ended up being the worst loss in Rockies franchise history as the Angels scored 25 runs.
David Peralta, who is batting .370/.420/.609 with three home runs over his last 15 games, could be among the Dodgers’ left-handed hitters to find success against Anderson.
Prior to the game the Dodgers recalled Justin Bruihl from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned Michael Grove. Bruihl had been on the Dodgers’ taxi squad in the event Clayton Kershaw needed to be placed on the 15-day injured list.
