Although Mookie Betts has been out of the postseason for multiple weeks due to the Los Angeles Dodgers getting swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks, he still found his way to the 2023 World Series in a new role.
Betts attended Game 3 at Chase Field on Monday in a media role, where he produced content and provided behind the scenes access across MLB platforms on social media.
As an MLB correspondent, Betts got to connect with friends, coaches and players who are participating in this year’s World Series, along with making an appearance on MLB Network, and talking with personalities and celebrities in attendance, among other initiatives.
As part of his time there, Betts reported from the press conference held for Aaron Judge, who was named the 2023 Roberto Clemente Award winner, and asked questions to the New York Yankees’ slugger.
Betts started by asking Judge if his dogs Gus and Penny made it to Arizona safely, to which Judge replied they did.
He followed that by asking the 6-foot-7 Judge how it felt to be the tallest Roberto Clemente Award winner.
“Me and Dave Winfield, we’re eye to eye,” Judge replied. “I think I tied the record. But this is just, like I said, a special moment.
“And just like you do with your platform, when we get to this, get to this level in our career and in our lives — I said it earlier on MLB Network: Too whom much is given, much required.
“We’ve been given so much, surrounded by so much great people, surrounded by great family and friends, getting the chance to play the game that we love, this is what it’s about, giving back and helping the next generation to follow in our footsteps.”
Betts followed that up by congratulation Judge on the honor and using his platform to inspire and provide assistance.
Mookie Betts shares praise of Trevor Bauer
The Dodgers released Trevor Bauer in January 2023 following sexual assault allegations that ultimately led to a 194-game suspension.
Bauer ended up signing with the Yokohama BayStars of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in Japan two months later. While his future and possibly returning to MLB is uncertain, Betts said he hoped teams would consider signing the pitcher and offered his praise for Bauer as a person.
Bauer was never criminally charged and recently agreed to a settlement with one accuser. However, other women have also brought forth sexual assault allegations against the 32-year-old.
