The Los Angeles Dodgers traded Minor League pitchers Nick Robertson and Justin Hagenman to the Boston Red Sox for Kiké Hernández and cash considerations. According to multiple reports, the Dodgers received $2.5 million from the Red Sox to cover a portion of Hernández’s remaining salary for 2023 that is an estimated $3.4 million.

The trade represents a reunion, as Hernández previously spent six seasons with the Dodgers from 2015-2020. He provided positional flexibility and delivered key postseason hits throughout that time.

Hernández batted .240/.312/.425 with 88 doubles, nine triples, 68 home runs and 213 RBI over 648 games in his first stint with the Dodgers. Hernández ranks ninth in Dodgers postseason history with nine home runs.

Although the 31-year-old continued to play multiple positions with the Red Sox, he struggled at shortstop this year and didn’t find much consistency at the plate.

The Dodgers presumably will look to count on Hernández’s career success against left-handed pitching. Manager Dave Roberts recently said the team stood to benefit from adding a right-handed bat at the August 1 MLB trade deadline.

Dodgers trade details

Nick Robertson

Robertson made his MLB debut against the Cincinnati Reds on June 7 and appeared in nine games for the Dodgers this season. Robertson pitched to a 6.10 ERA and 2.03 WHIP in those appearances.

With Triple-A Oklahoma City, he was 2-0 with a 2.54 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 28.1 innings pitched.

The Dodgers selected Robertson in the seventh round of the 2019 MLB Draft.

Justin Hagenman

Hagenman went 4-0 with a 2.78 ERA in 25 games (five starts) for Oklahoma City. In five Minor League seasons as part of the Dodgers’ farm system, the right-hander was 26-9 with a 3.61 ERA in 156 games (10 starts).

The Dodgers picked Hagenman in the 23rd round of the 2018 MLB Draft.
