The Los Angeles Dodgers signing Trevor Bauer to a record-breaking contract during the offseason was met by mixed reaction due to his outspoken personality and missteps on social media, and to a lesser extent amid some questions over how talented the right-hander is.

Bauer has been adamant about being capable to pitch to last year’s Cy Young Award level again, and also voiced a willingness to learn from past transgressions. Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said that was a topic of discussion he and president Stan Kasten had with Bauer prior to the signing.

Thus far the right-hander has largely agitated opposing fans but now is the subject of a police investigation for alleged sexual assault.

“The Dodgers were made aware of the allegations against Trevor Bauer late this afternoon and immediately contacted MLB, which will be handling this matter,” the team said in a statement. “The Dodgers take any allegations of this nature very seriously, but will have no further comment at this time.”

MLB has begun their own investigation into Bauer’s reported incident. Jon Fetterolf, one of Bauer’s agent, said the encounters with the woman were consensual.

In 2019, the Dodgers placed Julio Urias on administrative leave amid an ongoing MLB investigation into a domestic violence incident. Urias was ultimately suspended 20 games for violating the league’s Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.

Bauer remains mystified by home run woes

As for matters on the field, Bauer has continued to be plagued by home runs — surrendering two in a win against the San Francisco Giants this week. “It’s definitely bad luck,” he reiterated. “I mean, it’s not like I’m missing middle with pitches. At some point it will get better, I guess. I don’t know. Happy they’re solos, I guess.”
