Prior to beginning their rain-delayed game against the San Diego Padres on Saturday night, the Los Angeles Dodgers placed Bobby Miller on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation.
Miller’s IL stint was backdated to April 10, and so too was that of Connor Brogdon as he is now sidelined as well. Miller’s injury is much more significant of the two, as the Dodgers are relying on the young right-hander to help lead their starting rotation this season.
It’s not yet known how long the Dodgers will be without Miller, who’s made three starts this season.
According to Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times, Miller’s injury isn’t considered serious but he is not currently throwing:
One person familiar with Miller’s condition but not authorized to discuss it publicly said the injury is “not severe,” and that there is currently no need for surgery or any kind of operation. Miller has been shut down from throwing, but once he resumes, the Dodgers are expecting him to build back up at a normal pace.
How long Miller needs to refrain from throwing will directly impact the length of his stint on the injured list. Should that be the case for more than a week, it could amount to the 25-year-old possibly being out until some time in May.
There had not been any overt signs of shoulder trouble for Miller this season. He did struggle against the Chicago Cubs and only had minor improvement in an ensuing start, but much of that was attributed to needed development and growth with consistency.
In three starts this season, Miller is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.46 WHIP.
Bobby Miller injury history
This is the first time in Miller’s career he’s been put on the injured list, however he did deal with right shoulder trouble in Spring Training last year.
While that delayed his start to the 2023 season, it proved somewhat beneficial in terms of managing Miller’s workload as he wound up being needed by the Dodgers much earlier than anticipated.
