The Los Angeles Dodgers sent Wander Suero outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City after he cleared waivers. The right-hander was removed from the Dodgers’ 40-man roster upon being designated for assignment on Monday.
The Dodgers DFA’d Suero as the corresponding move to recalling Gavin Stone for his start against the Atlanta Braves. Stone is taking the place of Dustin May in the starting rotation, and joins Bobby Miller as Dodgers pitching prospects being relied upon at present time.
Suero was first called up by the Dodgers on May 5 as a corresponding move to Stone being optioned after his MLB debut. He was optioned one week later when Caleb Ferguson returned from the paternity list, but got added back onto the Dodgers active roster because Julio Urías was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain.
Suero struggled in his Dodgers debut, walking three batters in a loss to the San Diego Padres. The veteran reliever reduced his walks in three ensuing appearances, but allowed three runs last Sunday to the St. Louis Cardinals.
One of Suero’s appearances was two scoreless innings to follow Clayton Kershaw, as they combined to essentially provide the bullpen with a day of rest during what had been a heavy workload stretch.
In 12 games with Oklahoma City so far this season, Suero is 3-0 with a 1.32 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. He’s collected 11 strikeouts and walked seven batters across 13.2 innings in those games.
How did Dodgers get Wander Suero?
The Dodgers signed Suero to a Minor League contract in January.
Prior to this season, he had previous MLB experience with the Washington Nationals from 2018-2021. He went 14-13 with a 4.61 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over 185 relief appearances.
Suero spent the 2022 season pitching for the Los Angeles Angels’ Triple-A Salt Lake affiliate, going 2-3 with two saves, a 6.08 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in 20 games.
