The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Yency Almonte on the 15-day injured list due to a right knee sprain and recalled Victor González from Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to Saturday’s game against the Colorado Rockies.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said an MRI revealed Almonte’s knee injury to specifically be a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL). Almonte suffered his injury during the ninth inning of Friday’s win.

The right-hander was on the verge of finishing out the Dodgers’ 6-1 win when his right knee buckled upon throwing a pitch. Almonte hunched over and was checked on by Roberts and a Dodgers trainer before initially remaining in the game.

However, Roberts removed him after Almonte struggled with throwing two more pitches. Ryan Brasier entered to record the final out of the game.

“My cleat got caught in the hole and I tried to push off it. I guess it didn’t release, if that makes any sense, so it hyperextended,” Almonte explained after the game.

“I thought I could get through it, but obviously I couldn’t. I was just trying to finish the inning,” Almonte said. “I don’t want to have someone else have to get up and get going, especially quick. I’d rather just fight through it and get out of the inning, but that obviously didn’t happen.”

Almonte is 3-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 49 appearances this season. Last year he had a career-best 1.02 ERA over 33 games.

Victor González back with Dodgers

González is back on the Dodgers’ active roster two days after getting optioned as the corresponding move to Clayton Kershaw returning from the 15-day IL.

González is in a fourth stint with the Dodgers this year. He’s 2-3 with a 5.32 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 25 games (one start) for L.A.

With Oklahoma City, González has gone 2-0 with a 2.60 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 17.1 innings across 17 relief appearances.
