Stefen Romero, who was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers last Saturday, cleared waivers and was sent outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The Dodgers selected Romero’s contract when Hanser Alberto was placed on the paternity list last week, although he did not appear in any of the three games while being up with the Major League team.
Nevertheless, it marked the first time Romero was in the Majors since 2016. He previously spent parts of three seasons with the Seattle Mariners from 2014-2016, batting .195/.242/.307 with four home runs, 26 runs scored and 17 RBI in 94 games.
Romero then played overseas, doing so with the Orix Buffaloes of the Japan Pacific League from 2017-2019 and in 2021, and the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in the Japan Western League in 2020. Romero hit .265/.332/.498 with 70 doubles, 99 home runs and 272 RBI over 445 games in Japan.
The 33-year-old signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers this past offseason. With the OKC Dodgers this season, Romero has hit .270/.337/.461 with three home runs, 15 runs scored and 21 RBI.
Dave Roberts doesn’t believe Dodgers lineup is trending downward
The Dodgers began their nine-game road trip by taking advantage of hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park to complete a season series sweep of the Cincinnati Reds.
During the three games they scored at least eight runs in each contest, produced their first sacrifice bunt of the season, advanced runners in situational at-bats and continued to slug. Manager Dave Roberts said after the sweep he believed the Dodgers had their best series offensively.
However, since then the Dodgers lineup has struggled to generate much consistency en route to going just 2-3 in the last five games. L.A. was particularly held in check on Monday night in a 4-0 loss as Chad Kuhl threw a complete game.
It marked the first time the Dodgers had a complete-game shutout thrown against them at Coors Field. Following the loss, Roberts dismissed the notion that the Dodgers lineup has taken a step backward since the series against the Reds.
