The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed José Adames to a Minor League contract. In addition to the the signing appearing on the club’s transactions page, Adames also announced the deal on his Instagram.
Adames was originally signed as a 17-year-old international free agent by the then-Florida Marlins after the 2010 season and he spent the next six years in the Marlins organization.
During that time he was never promoted past the High-A level. Despite that, Adames was still the first player selected in the Minor League portion of the Rule 5 Draft after the 2016 season in getting taken by the Cincinnati Reds.
Adames underwent Tommy John Surgery near the end of 2016 and did not pitch in the Reds organization until the 2019 season. However, he only threw 3.2 innings before undergoing the surgery again.
Adames returned to pitching in 2021 at Double-A in the Boston Red Sox farm system and earned a promotion to Triple-A.
Adames has pitched in 165 games (40 starts) across his Minor League career, posting a 3.65 ERA while converting 20 of 25 save opportunities.
The right-hander has a fastball that can reach triple-digits and he has thrown 391.2 innings with 339 strikeouts to 186 walks.
Adames should continue to serve as Minor League depth for the Dodgers but could end up making his MLB debut in 2022 if the team find themselves in need of an arm for a few games.
Dodgers remain busy signing Minor League players
While the Dodgers are unable to sign Major League players during the MLB lockout, they have remained busy by signing multiple Minor League players to fill out their organization.
Their most notable recent move was signing Robbie Erlin, who has pitched parts of seven seasons at the Major League level, most recently with the Atlanta Braves in 2020.
They also signed pitchers Cole Duensing and Sam Gaviglio, along with catcher Chris Betts.
Gaviglio is the only one of the three with Major League experience, pitching in parts of five seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners. He last saw time at the Major League level in 2020, yielding three runs over three innings.
In addition to the aforementioned players, the Dodgers have signed Stefen Romero, Tomas Telis, Eddy Alvarez, Jason Martin, Beau Burrows and Yefry Ramirez to Minor League contracts throughout the offseason.
