The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed relief pitchers Jake Jewell and Ryan Meisinger off waivers from the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. The team did not yet announce corresponding 40-man roster moves for the additions of Jewell and Meisinger to the organization.
Jewell went 0-2 with a 9.90 ERA in 10 games for the Cubs this season. In 23 games for Triple-A Iowa, he went 2-1 with four saves and 2.78 ERA.
Jewell has spent parts of three years in the Majors with the L.A. Angels (2018-2019) and Cubs, going a combined 0-3 with a 7.75 ERA over 31 games. Jewell appeared in a career-high 18 games for the Angels in 2019, pitching to a 6.84 ERA and 1.37 WHIP.
The 28-year-old was selected by the Angels in the fifth round of the 2014 MLB Draft.
Meisinger didn’t earn a decision while pitching to a 12.27 ERA across seven appearances for the Cubs this year. He’s spent time in the Majors with the Baltimore Orioles (2018), St. Louis Cardinals (2019) and Cubs (2021), going a combined 2-1 with a 7.26 ERA.
In 171 Minor League games across six seasons, he is combined 14-13 with 23 saves in 24 chances and a 2.68 ERA. Meisinger was selected by the Orioles in the 15th round of the 2015 MLB Draft.
Tuesday is the deadline for postseason eligibly. Any player with an organization prior to the calendar turning to September is eligible to be with them during the playoffs. Such player does not also need to be on the 40-man roster before Sept. 1.
Dodgers in need of pitching
The Dodgers claiming a pair of relief pitchers hardly comes as a surprise given president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman’s history and the current state of the bullpen.
L.A. has shuffled pitchers on and off the roster for several days and although they will be in position to carry 28 active players starting Wednesday, internal options are limited.
Without replacing an injured player on the active roster, Victor Gonzalez can’t be recalled until Saturday. Darien Núñez can return Monday, Andre Jackson on Tuesday, Edwin Uceta on Wednesday and Mitch White until Sept. 9.
The Dodgers have used a franchise-record 38 pitchers this season, though that does include position players Andy Burns and Justin Turner getting off the mound.
