The Los Angeles Dodgers designated Cavan Biggio for assignment and activated Freddie Freeman off the restricted list.
Freeman first left the Dodgers before they began play against the Houston Astros to begin their roadtrip as one of his three sons, Maximus, became ill and was hospitalized.
He ended up going on the family emergency list on July 27. On Aug. 3, he was placed on the restricted list due to the time constraints of the family emergency list.
After a few days in the hospital, it was determined Max has been battling a severe case of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder.
Thankfully, Max has made tremendous improvements recently, which led to him returning home on Sunday after eight days in the intensive care unit.
While he still has a long way ahead to rebuild his strength and learn how to walk again, Max is on the path to a full recovery thanks to the doctors and nurses that cared for him.
The Dodgers have given Freeman all the time he needs to be away from the club and did not push him into coming back, but he now makes his return and discussed everything that’s happened over the past week.
Freeman left the Dodgers in the midst of another strong season, batting .288/.395/.493 with 16 home runs, 63 runs scored, 67 RBI and a 149 wRC+.
It may take him some time to get his timing and rhythm down again, but regardless, the Dodgers are happy to have their superstar back in the mix.
Dodgers designate Cavan Biggio for assignment
Biggio has been starting in place of Freeman at first base, but he was the odd man out as part of the Dodgers roster crunch the Dodgers will need to deal with in the coming weeks.
Over the last seven games, Biggio hit .217/.357/.522 with two home runs, six RBI and three runs scored in place of Freeman, stepping up for the club while also playing a solid first base.
However, the season overall has been a struggle for him as he’s hit just .197 with a .622 OPS, totaling five home runs and 19 RBI.
Biggio’s next landing spot is to be determined, but he could be claimed by another team, clear waivers and sent to the Minor Leagues, or clear waivers and elect to become a free agent.
