The Los Angeles Dodgers released Cavan Biggio after he went unclaimed on waivers. Biggio is now a free agent and able to sign with any team.

He will be postseason eligible so long as added onto a 40-man roster by 8:59 p.m. PT on Aug. 31.

Biggio joined the Dodgers in the middle of June when they traded Minor League pitcher Braydon Fisher to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Dodgers also received cash considerations as part of the trade.

Biggio had been designated for assignment by the Blue Jays the week prior despite still having Minor League options available. The presumption was Biggio, who has more than five years of Major League service time, exercised his right to reject an option to the Minors and that in turn led to being DFA’d.

He last had been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo in 2022.

The Dodgers planned for Biggio to help fill the void at third base created by Max Muncy’s right oblique strain.

“He’s a baseball player. He’s versatile, can play anywhere essentially on the diamond,” manager Dave Roberts said after Biggio was added to the Dodgers’ roster.

“For us right now, Max the injury is taking longer than we had hoped, and so to get some coverage versus right-handed pitching, running him out there at third base is sort of the plan. And if I have to kick him out, whether it be to center, to right, to second base, during a game for whatever reason, if the game calls for it, we can do that. But yeah, it’s primarily just to play third base versus right-handed pitching.”

Biggio hit .192/.306/.329 with one double, three home runs and 10 RBI over 30 games with the Dodgers.

The 29-year-old had improved results in his final seven games with the Dodgers, batting .217/.357/.522 with two home runs, six RBI and three runs scored while also playing a solid first base in place of Freddie Freeman during his time away from the team.

Why did Dodgers DFA Cavan Biggio?

Biggio was designated for assignment as a corresponding move to Freeman returning from the restricted list and family emergency leave. The open 40-man roster spot was then filled when Brusdar Graterol returned from the 60-day injured list.
