The Los Angeles Dodgers officially activated Blake Treinen off the 60-day injured list and designated Jake Reed for assignment to make room on both the active roster and 40-man roster.
Treinen had been on the IL since April 22 because of an undisclosed right shoulder injury where surgery was considered an option. The Dodgers encouraged him to rehab rather than go through with the surgery with the hopes of having Treinen available for the postseason.
The right-hander appeared in seven rehab games for Triple-A Oklahoma City, pitching six innings while giving up five runs (three earned) on eight hits. He finished with nine strikeouts against one walk in those appearances. Although the results aren’t great, the Dodgers were more focused on Treinen’s his stuff looks and making sure he is healthy.
The 34-year-old has only thrown three innings this season but managed to strike out 50% of the batters he faced while walking none with a 3.00 ERA and 0.33 WHIP. In his career with the Dodgers, Treinen has posted an ERA of 2.50 with 112 strikeouts and a 1.02 WHIP over 100.2 innings.
Reed joined the Dodgers this season when they claimed him off waivers from the New York Mets. Reed was recalled this week and converted his first career save, fittingly against the Mets.
It’s possible Reed remains in the Dodgers organization if he goes unclaimed, but he can also elect free agency if clearing waivers.
Dodgers signed Blake Treinen to contract extension
A month after placing him on the IL, the Dodgers signed Treinen to a one-year contract extension that runs through the 2023 season. He previously had an $8 million team option or $1.5 million buyout on his deal for next year.
Dodgers president of baseball operations said guaranteeing his deal for 2023 was to help the reliever feel better about going through with the rehab process.
“With Blake, I think with where his practical status was, if I were his advisor, I think him undergoing surgery might have made more sense,” Friedman said. “So it was how to remove that from the equation and to provide him the peace of mind to run out this course, which helps us this October.
“Potentially increase the chances of him being able to help us this October and if the rehab didn’t work, we would still try to pick up the option anyway and to provide the protection both ways.”
