The Single-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes Opening Day roster for the 2023 season was highlighted by Los Angeles Dodgers prospects Maddux Bruns and Rayne Doncon.
Bruns and Doncon are ranked among the Dodgers’ top-20 prospects and headline a Quakes roster that ended the 2022 season on a five-game losing streak, finishing with a 68-64 record and in third place of the California League South Division.
Bruns returns to the Quakes roster for his second season after posting a 5.68 ERA across 21 starts while notching 67 strikeouts in 44.1 innings.
Doncon has been a top performer from the Dodgers’ 2020 international class and returns to the Quakes for his first full season in Single-A after 11 games in Rancho to wrap 2022.
Quakes manager John Shoemaker returns for his third season. The Quakes missing the playoffs last year marked the first time that was the case in non-COVID season since 2014.
Shoemaker was selected in the 35th round of the 1977 MLB Draft and was been dubbed the Dodgers captain of player development in recent years. He’s one of the most respected members of the organization’s Minor League system which is why he sports a “C” on his jersey.
Of the 30 active players on the Quakes’ Opening Day roster, 18 spent time with the affiliate over the past two years. Notably, Kelvin Bautista, Bruns, Jeisson Cabrera, Chris Campos, Jon Edwards, Gabe Emmett, Peter Heubeck, Joel Ibarra, Madison Jeffrey, Jerming Rosario and Luis Valdez return to the pitching staff.
Of the position players returning are Jorge Puerta, Kenneth Betancourt, Doncon, Kyle Nevin, Juan Alonso, Nick Biddison and Gaige Howard.
Another prized Dodgers prospect with the Quakes is catcher Jesus Galiz, a newcomer at Single-A. Diego Cartaya was universally ranked as the organization’s top Minor Leaguer and earned a promotion to Double-A Tulsa after splitting time between Rancho Cucamonga and High-A Great Lakes last year.
