Major League Baseball announced the allotment of 2021 postseason shares, with the total pool the largest in history at $90,468,645.00. The amount is up from $50 million last year and $80,861,145.74 in 2019.
The players’ pool is formed from 50% of the gate receipts from Wild Card Games, 60% of gate receipts from the first three games of the Division Series, 60% of receipts from the first four games of the League Championship Series, and 60% of gate receipts from the first four games of the World Series.
The pool was divided among the 10 postseason teams: the World Series winner (36%), the World Series runner-up (24%), the two League Championship Series runners-up (12% each), the four Division Series runners-up (3.25% each) and the two runners-up in the Wild Card Games (1.5% each).
The Los Angeles Dodgers, who were eliminated by the eventual World Series champion Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series, generated $10,856,237 in the players’ pool. They issued 80 full shares, 15.75 partial shares and 13 cash awards. The full value of a share was $112,701.
The Braves’ first World Series win since 1995 was accompanied by $32,568,712.20 in their share of the players’ pool. The American League champion Houston Astros earned $21,712,474.80.
Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox generated $10,856,237 in the players’ pool. The Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago White Sox, San Francisco Giants and Milwaukee Brewers each earned $2,940,230.96. The New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals also both received $1,357,029.68.
Dodgers split $18 million in postseason shares after winning 2020 World Series
In 2020, when the Dodgers captured their first World Series since 1988, the club earned — and split — $18 million. That figure would have been significantly larger in a normal season.
L.A. previously earned $2,627,987.24 in 2019, $21,165,272.04 in 2018 and $20,280,103.72 in 2017.
