In what many believed to be a must-win game for the Los Angeles Dodgers, they were able to prevail in 13 innings over the Milwaukee Brewers to even the National League Championship Series at two games apiece with a 2-1 walk-off victory.
Neither club was able to get much going offensively and after several scoreless innings, the Dodgers finally broke through in the 13th when Manny Machado singled and then took second on a wild pitch.
With two outs in the inning, Cody Bellinger stepped to the plate with a chance to end it. He did exactly that by hitting a single to right field to score Machado. Christian Yelich came up with a perfect throw to home, but Machado was able to slide in safely.
The Dodgers’ first run of the game was scored all the way back in the first inning when Brian Dozier drove in Chris Taylor with a single.
From there, the Dodgers’ pitching staff was outstanding and it began with Rich Hill, who gave up just one run in five innings of work.
The bullpen then combined to toss eight shutout innings, allowing just five hits and a walk while striking out nine. For just the second time this season, Kenley Jansen tossed a full two innings.
Perhaps the star of the bullpen was 21-year-old left-hander Julio Urias though as he pitched a scoreless 13th inning to earn the win. Urias had shoulder surgery last July that kept him out of action for over a year, and he threw just four big leagues innings in 2018.
No one could have predicted that he would be getting a win in a postseason game, but it is a testament to the perseverance he showed to make it back to 100 percent to help his team earn a big victory.
