Although the Los Angeles Dodgers fell short of sweeping the Philadelphia Phillies this week, they managed to still come away with a third consecutive series victory.
Mookie Betts led the way with three hits in a second consecutive win over the Phillies — his most in a game since June 2 — which included a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning and two-out RBI single in the eighth.
Betts has been seeing the ball much better as of late but still isn’t sure what to make of his swing. “I mean, it’s been so in and out, it’s kind of tough to say,” he said this week.
“I’m just trying to take one day at a time, just focus that way and maybe in a month or so we can kind of take a look back. Right now it’s just one game at a time.”
Betts is in the midst of another All-Star-caliber season but has been critical of himself for not consistently hitting the ball as hard as he would like.
The four-time All-Star nonetheless is hopeful his home run on Tuesday could help right the ship. “All it takes is one pitch or a swing, but like I said, it’s been so in and out,” Betts said. “It’s been kind of tough.”
As Betts continues working on his swing, he mentioned that feel and mechanics are among his biggest focuses. “I think all of it. It’s definitely feel, definitely mechanics,” Betts said.
It’s kind of all those type of things. It’s just one of those things where you have to be consistent in all those facets and like I said, it’s taking it one day at a time.”
Betts soaked in Reopening Day at Dodger Stadium
Betts’ 3-for-5 showing against the Phillies on Tuesday came in front of a capacity crowd at Dodger Stadium for the first time since being traded to the Dodgers more than 16 months ago.
The wait was certainly worth it for Betts, who praised Dodgers fans for showing up in big numbers and supporting him. “Obviously it was a great feeling knowing that they’re finally cheering on my behalf. Just happy and thankful we finally got this day,” Betts said after the game.
“At the beginning I kind of took it all in since it was my first time being in front of all the fans here at Dodger Stadium. So the first couple innings I kind of took it in and after that I kind of tuned it out and got back to business. I’m used to playing in front of big crowds, so I got back to business. But I definitely soaked it all in while I could.”
