Mike Freeman elected for free agency as opposed to accepting a Minor League assignment with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and has gone on to sign a Minor League deal with the Chicago Cubs, per the MLB.com transactions page.

Freeman was designated for assignment last week once the Dodgers finalized their trade with the Texas Rangers for Yu Darvish. Los Angeles claimed Freeman off waivers from the Seattle Mariners on May 26, 2017.

He appeared in four games with the Dodgers, each time entering off the bench. He went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts in the limited action.

Freeman hit .306/.384/.372 in 41 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 30-year-old played second base and third base for the Dodgers’ top affiliate.

Freeman was initially selected by the San Diego Padres in the 41st round of the 2006 Draft but elected to attend Clemson University. He was then taken by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 36th round of the 2009 Draft, only to remain in college.

The Diamondbacks drafted Freeman in the 11th round the following year. Freeman made his MLB debut in 2016, spending brief stints with the Diamondbacks and Mariners. He’s a lifetime 7-for-57 with one double, one home run and four RBI in 41 MLB games over two seasons.
