The Los Angeles Dodgers continued to roll with a 9-8 walk-off win over the Minnesota Twins in 12 innings that extended their winning streak to six games. Max Muncy broke out of a slump by going 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI.
The decline in performance coincided with the 32-year-old battling an illness that has included a lingering cough. “It felt really good,” Muncy said after recording the 13th multi-home run game of his career.
“I’ve definitely been grinding. The guys in here know it. It’s just one of those things where I felt like I’ve been putting together really good at-bats over the last two weeks, and there’s just no energy there and there’s nothing in the swing.
“Your body is fighting an illness and you’re trying to do everything you can to help the team win, so to get some results felt really good.”
Muncy believes he has regained some of his strength now that the worst of his illness is behind him. “Just a little bit more energy,” he began. “Maybe I’m finally kicking it. Who knows? The cough has definitely not been as abundant, so maybe we’re turning a page hopefully.”
The final five innings of Monday’s matchup between the Dodgers and Twins was nothing short of hectic, as there were a total of three lead changes and six pitchers used. “It was up and down, but that’s baseball,” Muncy said.
“You’ve got to fight through it, whether it’s the lows or the highs. Stay even-keeled throughout the whole thing, and that’s what we try to do.”
Dave Roberts wants Max Muncy to look beyond results
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was impressed with the swings Muncy put on the ball against the Twins and hopes that will be the lasting imression.
“Max is feeling much better, especially after a couple homers,” Roberts said.
“He hit two homers, but if you look back at those at-bats, spoiling some tough pitches and shortening his swing, I think that’s what led to those two homers and hard base hit up the middle. I hope that’s a takeaway from him, not just the three swings he took that had results.”
