While the Los Angeles Dodgers are in the midst of unprecedented success in franchise history, their seven consecutive National League West titles have not lent to ending the World Series drought.
The postseason shortcomings can be traced to multiple factors, but Clayton Kershaw has often taken the brunt of the blame. Considered one of the greatest pitchers of his generation, Kershaw has had moments where he struggled in must-win playoff games. Those have overshadowed games in which he pitched well.
The longtime Dodgers ace showed raw emotion after surrendering back-to-back home runs during a relief appearance in Game 5 of the 2018 NL Division Series. The Washington Nationals tied the game with the blasts off Kershaw, and went on to eliminate the Dodgers in extra innings.
With Kershaw’s reputation having taken yet another hit, Dodgers part owner Magic Johnson opened up about his strong desire for the left-hander to win a World Series and reap the spoils, via “Lunchtime with Roggin and Rodney” on AM 570 L.A. Sports
“I just want one for Kershaw. I just want a World Series ring for him. He’s delivered for the Dodger fans, but we just haven’t closed the deal for him in the World Series. So that’s what I want. He deserves to have a championship ring. None of these guys understand like I do, when you win in this town, the parade is unbelievable. I just want to see Clayton ride on that float and experience what I’ve experienced five times as a player and then another five time as an owner of the Lakers. So that’s 10 parades I’ve been through, and it never got old. It’s special. When you win in this town you are beloved forever.”
Although Kershaw was visibly shaken after his performance in Game 5 of last year’s NLDS, he reported to Spring Training determined as ever and in good health. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was among those to note Kershaw’s strong disposition and he predicted a big season was forthcoming.
Kershaw was named the Opening Day starter for a franchise-record ninth time, but that of course has yet to manifest due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The 32-year-old is eager for the 2020 season to begin, but he’s also made it clear leaving family for upwards of four months under the Arizona plan is not a scenario that would gain his approval.
