Although it’s now going a third season since the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers engaged in a brawl, there doesn’t appear to be any subsiding in the underlying animosity.
Perhaps inspired by the infamous brawl, the Dodgers went on a historic summer run, catapulted themselves to the top of the National League West standings, and celebrated in the Chase Field pool upon clinching the division title.
There wasn’t much to write home about during the 2014 season, but tension rose between the two clubs last spring when multiple players were hit by pitches, including Justin Turner, twice. It began with Chris Anderson hitting Mark Trumbo on an 0-2 count.
Turner was hit in the home half of the same inning, prompting warnings to be issued. However, it not put an end to the beanball.
Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale and pitcher Allen Webster were both ejected as the right-hander plunked Turner after benches were warned. Derek Eitel later hit Dodgers Minor Leaguer Dillon Moyer, which led to Eitel and Diamondbacks bench coach/acting manager Glenn Sherlock getting ejected.
Now fast forward to Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium, where Turner was again a magnet for Diamondbacks pitching. The Dodgers third baseman was hit twice, with the second coming on his left hand in the seventh inning. He was checked on and remained in the game.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Turner was sent for X-rays, which came back negative, though he intends to get Turner rest in the coming days, per Cary Osborne of Dodger Insider:
“He’s just sore,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “I think that’s the extent. There’s some swelling. We’ll kind of talk about it tomorrow. I think at some point in time in the next couple of days I wanted to give him (a day off) anyway. So we’ll have that conversation. But he’s fine. We took some pictures and they were negative.”
Dodgers batters have been hit nine times this season, which leads the Majors. Joc Pederson was also hit by a pitch in the Dodgers’ win. Rubby De La Rosa and Jake Barrett hit Turner, while Randall Delgado plunked Pederson.
Diamondbacks infielders Nick Ahmed and Jean Segura were hit on Tuesday; so too as was Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig. The clubs wrap up their three-game series on Thursday, and won’t meet again until June 13.
