One of the early splashes the Los Angeles Dodgers made during the offseason was signing Joe Kelly to a three-year contract. Not only were they adding a relief pitcher with World Series experience, but one who sought to play for his hometown team.
That desire not only made Kelly signing an ideal fit, but he was also a natural choice to surprise customers at a local Smart & Final location during the 2019 Dodgers Love L.A. Community Tour.
Kelly and Burbank High School students filled up several shopping carts with his favorite Smart & Final snacks to donate to the school’s sports teams. In addition, one lucky customer who jumped in to assist won a $500 Smart & Final gift card.
“Shoppers and store associates were thrilled to have their everyday grocery trip take an exciting turn as they met the ‘newest employee’ at Smart & Final Extra! in Burbank,” Deb Bell-Versluis, director of corporate communications for Smart & Final told DodgerBlue.com.
“While Joe Kelly was a ‘rookie’ at bagging groceries, he showed shoppers that his famous arm is not only good at pitching fastballs. He restocked produce, frosted customer’s cupcakes, and loaded up carts of snacks, which were donated to Burbank High School’s local youth sports programs.”
The partnership between the Dodgers and Smart & Final is one that aims to provide the local community with quality food products and customer service. “Joe Kelly and the Dodgers brought an unforgettable day to our customers and Smart & Final associates,” Bell-Versluis said.
“And any opportunity to surprise and delight our communities – and spark smiles with donated groceries – is a win-win for all of us.”
